Near Magnano, Italy, 11 November 1943, Floyd, armed only with his .45 calibre pistol, singlehandedly attacked an enemy machinegun position which was decimating his squad. He killed the occupants then picked up the heavy-machinegun and carried it to his squad. Under withering enemy fire he returned to the enemy position and retrieved the gun's ammunition. Returning to his squad he turned the captured weapon's fire on the counter attacking enemy and routed them. For his selfless bravery he was cited for his Nations highest Military award, the MEDAL OF HONOR. Floyd was offered the opportunity to serve in a safe rear area, but he declined. Leading his men against the enemy, Floyd was killed on 3 February 1944. His MEDAL OF HONOR was postumously presented to his mother, on 26 April 1944, by Maj.
